"We teach what we value"
--Gloria Ladson-Billings My primary goal in teaching is to inspire my students to be more curious, to read, think, and write more critically about the issues facing our societies at both a local and global level. Through my teaching I aspire to reframe the deficit-oriented discourses about families and children facing structural inequality, encouraging current and future educators and administrators to center the brilliance of children and families who are vulnerable to discriminatory systems.
I prioritize a student-centered pedagogy informed by social constructivism. As such, I often employ project-based learning to maximize engagement, and contextualize problem solving that leads to more opportunities for social justice possibilities.
